Augustus Toplady penned this hymn in 1776, and it has been a staple in churches ever since. The legend goes that upon seeing lightning strike a rock and split it during a thunderstorm, Toplady was inspired to write about Christ as the cleft in the rock, who saves us from the deluge of sin and judgment. This is one of Greg's favorite hymns for its rich imagery and deep theology.
